 Lighting Assignment 3: One Light

Rueful: For this photo I placed the light below the subject at a 45 degree angle with the subject in profile. The light was a couple of feet from the subject's face with a white card behind it and a flag was placed between the light and the lens to prevent flare. The Angle of Reflection is demonstrated by the stronger, more direct light hitting only his face, leaving the sides of his face dark. The fact that light travels in a straight line is also demonstrated by the direct light that his hitting his face and casting his neck and hair into shadow. The direct light, strong shadow, and subject in profile creates a feeling of sad reflection.

Optimistic: For this photo I placed the light off-center under the subject's chin. The light was closer to the subject than in the previous photo, but a diffusion panel was placed between the light and the subject. A flag was also placed between the light and the camera to remove flare. The diffusion panel (in opposition to no diffusion) helps to demonstrate that light travels in a straight line. The diffusion also lessened the specular highlights and spread the light out more evenly, creating a more positive effect. The placement of the light at an angle to the subject's face provides a feeling of buoyancy.
